SAN JOSE, Calif., Jan. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- SDForum, Silicon Valley's
leading source of information and education in the technology
community, today announced the creation of a special interest group
(SIG) dedicated to exploring technology issues of virtual worlds. The
first Virtual Worlds SIG will be January 22, 2007 at Pillsbury Winthrop
Office in Palo Alto.
The event entitled "Virtual Worlds: Ready - Fire - Aim" will highlight
IBM speakers Doug McDavid from the IBM Academy of Technology, and Dave
Kamalsky from the IBM Almaden Research Center. The physical event will
be streamed simultaneously to SDForum's Innovation Island.
"The trend toward virtualization of work experience through 3D graphic
interfaces is unstoppable," said Doug McDavid. "The only question is
how to derive business value from the forces that are currently
converging in the marketplace."
"IBM has shown impressive vision in embracing the new medium of virtual
worlds," said Corey Bridges, Virtual Worlds SIG co-chair, and
co-founder of Multiverse. "It's going to be invaluable, hearing the
insights and predictions of the IBM team members who are actively
involved in charting this new course."
Virtual environments have become significant places for innovations in
social interaction, business collaboration and learning. The
development phase of the basic information communications ended around
the time of the dot-com crash and the industry is now in the deployment
phase of virtualization.
"This is an exciting and historic time when people are finding that
virtual worlds provide incredible experiences," said Bob Ketner,
Virtual Worlds SIG co-chair, and founder of design firm Studio SFO. "We
are creating a place to discover new concepts and discussions about
this compelling new medium."

this the riveting issues in this space."
