Serena Offers Complementary ALM/PPM Product Line and Global Presence SAN MATEO, Calif.--Serena Software, Inc., the leading global independent software company focused solely on application lifecycle management (ALM), today announced that it was named a Visionary in a new, independent research report from Gartner, the “Magic Quadrant for IT Project and Portfolio Management, 2007.”
ALM and PPM: Serena’s Integrated Strategy Serena® Mariner™, the visionary Project and Portfolio Management (PPM) solution, allows companies to manage IT as an investment portfolio by defining objectives, controlling risk, and efficiently balancing resource demands. With enterprise-wide visibility, projects are prioritized and assigned based on fit with business strategy. By integrating Mariner with Serena Dimensions® and Serena TeamTrack® into a single ALM offering, Serena combines traditional PPM metrics, such as project costs and resource availability, with software development metrics, such as requirements met or defects open. This yields information that IT managers and executives can use to make better portfolio decisions and focus critical IT resources on higher-priority projects. “Serena is proud to be the first and only vendor to integrate project and portfolio management with traditional application lifecycle management tools — all within six months of our acquisition of Pacific Edge Mariner,” said Jeremy Burton, Serena president and CEO. “As a result, IT management now has full visibility into actual project execution right alongside their project plan. This becomes increasingly important as business units apply more pressure on IT to overcome the application backlog that hampers their ability to quickly build and deploy new applications that differentiate themselves in the marketplace.” The Methodology Behind the Report To arrive at the correct market definitions for this report, Gartner considers applications to be in the PPM market if they support most of the nine areas described in the Project Management Body of Knowledge from the Project Management Institute (PMI). The prerequisite core is an integrated approach to the areas of resource, time and cost management. A mixture of six major factors and how well a solution and its provider meet them mainly determines inclusion in the IT PPM Magic Quadrant. The Magic Quadrant is copyrighted 2007 by Gartner, Inc. and is reused with permission. The Magic Quadrant is a graphical representation of a marketplace at and for a specific time period. It depicts Gartner's analysis of how certain vendors measure against criteria for that marketplace, as defined by Gartner. Gartner does not endorse any vendor, product or service depicted in the Magic Quadrant, and does not advise technology users to select only those vendors placed in the "Leaders" quadrant.
