Agile Tour 2010 is China’s first-ever nationwide technology community event
NEW YORK, NY (February 17, 2010) – Agile Tour 2010, a series of global events held in October and November, took place to bring together the agile community. The tour’s stop in China was that country’s first-ever nationwide technology community event. Gatherings held in eight cities introduced attendees to all aspects of the agile methodology, including Scrum, Lean and Kanban.
“The events were a huge success,” said Daniel Teng, the first-ever Certified Scrum Coach (CSC) in China and the initial organizer of the program. “I am really happy with how the tour turned out. I believe this could be a turning point for agile and Scrum in China, and that very soon we could start to see an increase in adoption.”
What began as one agile event that was to take place in either Beijing or Shanghai grew drastically once Agile Tour China organizers realized that the program was attracting much more interest – and many more contributions – than they had expected. The tour visited eight cities: Hangzhou, Beijing, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Chengdu, Xi'An and Qingdao; and became the biggest technology event in China’s history, attracting 1,500 attendees, 2,500 online and offline registrations, 29 sponsors and more than 50 speakers.
Organizing the event was itself a practice in agile. “We organized in a chaotic mechanism, centered by Internet and kept free of global directive," said Daniel, "This was indeed a great challenge, as well as an opportunity to build a self-management team, and deliver an agile event, in an agile way."
The events featured many internationally known Scrum and agile practitioners, such as James Grenning, Jean Tabaka, Erik Petersen, Patrice Petit and Sai Venkat. Especially popular were the interactive sessions, which included Open Space, Coding Dojo and Agile Games. In response to interest generated by the Agile Tour, a public Coding Dojo has opened in China and many companies are hosting their own Dojos.
