Product Owners in the Enterprise  - February 2009First of all, my apologies for this month's late issue. We've been working to get the new Agile Journal website up and running and it took a little longer than we expected, but the Agile Journal V2.0 is here at last!feb-09-product2big

The Agile Journal's new home is much more than a place to read high quality articles on the practice of agile development. Some of the content is still being populated and will rely on you, the community members, to make it more valuable.

The first thing you will want to do at the new agileJournal.com is to create a profile. That way you can setup a blog, post in the forums and gain access to premieum content like the educational video series.

V2.0 is designed from the ground up with a new infrastructure and many new features with the agile community in mind. It is designed to be a networking site much like Facebook or Plaxo where you can share your ideas with others about anything agile. In fact you already link up to your twitter account and will soon be able to link your facebook account too. If you have a resource to share add it to the resources directory. Start a blog and share your thoughts. Post your questions in the forums to see what others have done. If you are into video there are educational videos available in the media center and you can also record your own and upload it just like YouTube. The most important part of all this however is that this site is for you. If there is something that should change or be added let us know and we'll get it fixed. We want to hear your feedback. Thank you for being a member of the Agile Journal community and please feel free to contact us at anytime to share your t  houghts.

As for the articles in this issue, we've got an article Dean Leffingwell on the product owner role in large organizations, another comic strip from Chris Matts delving into the details of the last responsible moment, an article discussing continuous testing - a hybrid of TDD and CI - from Rod Coffin and many more.

As always, thanks for reading and being part of the community!

The Product Owner in the Agile Enterprise
Part I- On Agile Product Managers and Product Owners: A Scalable, Nuanced Approach Note: This is the first of a three part series on the critical nature of the product owner's role within the agile software enterprise. In Part I, I'll describe why software vendors need to adopt a nuanced, rather than off-the-shelf, approach to this role; one which empowers both Agile Product Managers and Agile Product Owners to drive the enterprise to meet its objectives. In Part II: Responsibilities of the Agi...

Requirements Come Second
Despite our best efforts we need to know what we are going to code before we write the code.  And as much as we might like to test before we write the code we can't really run tests until we have some code.  Agile overlaps requirements discovery and implementation so coding can start with minimal or outline requirements but there is still a sequence.

Raising the Bar with Continuous Testing
A hallmark of truly agile teams is an unquenchable desire to continually find new and better ways of developing software.  These teams believe that there really are no "best" practices, only practices which work better or worse for them.  This line of thinking is even apparent in the first line of the agile manifesto stating "we are uncovering better ways of developing".  Notice the progenitors of the manifesto didn't propose that they had discovered the best way, only better ways.

Last Responsible Moment Part 2
This is the second "Real Option" comic strip. I've just finished the first draft of the third episode and started thinking about the fourth. Publishing the first comic was a real learning curve. As a result, I had a great conversation with my father about type faces and fonts. He is a retired printer and finishing artist. He told me about Eric Gill's sans serif. The serif is a little bit of the font that was was created when block makers and stone masons finished off a letter. Unfortunatel...

Group Coherence for Project Teams - Collaborative Interaction
The hyper-productive teams we have observed apply high rates of practical collaboration. We believe that fostering Collaborative Interaction leads to increases in productivity, yet performance is recognized at the individual rather than team level. In environments where collaboration is required, managers should avoid assigning project work and accountability to individuals. Inappropriate rewards for individuals are additional distractions from their collaborative project duties. ...

An Agile Approach to Scheduling
Back in October 2009 I had the opportunity to attend a conference in Buenos Aires where Mary Poppendieck was scheduled to speak about Lean Product Development and the Theory of Constraints (TOC) applied to software development. Most of this paper is based on the impressions I had from that session and my own personal points of view. ...

Organizational Challenges
The following article is an excerpt from "Agile Testing" by Lisa Crispin and Janet Gregory. To download the full chapter, click here. Part IIOrganizational ChallengesWhen software development organizations implement agile development, the testing or QA team often takes the longest to make the transition. Independent QA teams have become entrenched in many organizations. When they start to adapt to a new agile organization, they encounter cultural differences that are difficult for them to accep..
