Globally Distributed Development

glob_dev1Welcome to the second issue of the Agile Journal. This month, we explore the many challenges Agile teams face in running globally distributed development projects.

Globally distributed development can include all/any of the following:

  • Teams with developers, testers, users and/or other team members working at more than one location.
  • Teams engaging with third-party partners -consultants, vendors, even customers - to deliver business applications.
  • Teams that must incorporate a number of different styles (cultural, technical, management, etc.) across their distributed locations.

The Growing Influence Of Open Source Projects
Two years ago, I began writing about the impact of open source development tools, components, processes and organizational models on corporate IT shops. I worked with a range of development managers that shared a very similar point of view: instead of dismissing the so-called renegade open source projects, the managers emulated these projects' activities and hoped to mimic their success. This trend is only growing and I am intrigued by the ways in which IT shops are looking to the open source community for leadership.

Impact of Open Source on Application Development
os_penguinHow is it that the geeky, non-traditional world of open source software is having such a tremendous impact on traditional IT organizations? Development teams, and Agile projects in particular, are increasingly looking to the open source community for tools, application components, best practices and even organizational models for software projects. Of all of the influences in the industry, the advent of open source software is by far the most significant that we've seen in many years.

Tackling Offshore Agile Development
july-08-offshorebigAs an analyst, I have spoken with hundreds of software developers and managers struggling to improve their delivery capabilities. Many are turning to Agile processes as a means to deliver high quality solutions and at the same time improve time to benefits. And, at the same time, these teams need to work with ever-shrinking budgets. Of all the questions they asked about Agile development in 2005, the most common - and the toughest - was: "Can we take advantage of offshore resources and still use Agile processes?"

CASE STUDY: Learning.com

Portland, Oregon-based Learning.com is a fast-growing software company providing online services to students and teachers to help integrate computer technology and education into their curricula. With a user base of over 30,000 teachers and over 1.5 million students accessing its subscription-based hosted products, Learning.com must continue to innovate and meet market needs while continuing to provide robust and scalable products.

FEATURED BOOK: Agile Project Management with Scrum - by Ken Schwaber

Purchase or review this book online Scrum is one of the most widely used Agile processes in the US and around the world. Why is this? First of all, Scrum is easy to adopt because it makes sense to development teams and empowers them to deliver value through software products. And, it's also a very practical approach in that it does not prescribe specific development techniques and so it can be adopted by companies with a range of legacy processes and tools in place. From software vendors to corporate IT organizations to offshore consultancies, teams using Scrum are successful in delivering valuable software faster.

And The Agile Survey Says…

In planning the launch of the Agile Journal, CM Crossroads polled its subscribers on their attitudes towards Agile development and to see how the subscribers' values fit with the priorities for the upcoming journal. In February 2006, over 400 IT professionals representing 25 different industries responded to a short online survey. The results showed a very high level of interest in Agile processes and the recognition that responding to changing business requirements and delivering value are the key success factors for development organizations.

LogicLibrary's Logidex Receives Second ''Ready for IBM Rational Software'' Validation
LogicLibrary(R), the leader in SOA governance and software reuse, today announced that the company's AnySource Asset Adapter has received IBM's "Ready for IBM Rational software" validation for IBM Rational(R) ClearCase(R) and IBM Rational(R) ClearQuest(R) integration. This validation demonstrates that the adapter, which is an extension to LogicLibrary's flagship Logidex product, integrates according to IBM specifications, with Rational ClearCase and Rational ClearQuest and complements the existing Logidex plug-in with key products in the IBM Software Development Platform, including IBM Rational Application Developer, IBM Rational Software Architect and IBM Rational Software Modeler.
