Highlights from the AGILE 2008 CONFERENCE - Expanding Agile Horizons

Agile thought leader Mary Poppendieck encouraged conference participants to ask themselves, "What is it we want to do when we grow up?" There is little question agile software development has crossed the chasm. Poppendieck argued it's time to look at the whole system and expand our thinking to take in the new landscape. According to Poppendieck, "After all, a process that does not change over time becomes rigid and eventually fades away." Poppendieck examined five dimensions of systems and considered how to expand agile horizons for each one.

New Study Shows Agile Teams Are Fast to Market and More Productive
Development teams utilizing Agile practices were on average 37 percent faster delivering their software to market and increased their teams' productivity by 16 percent, according to a new study that was commissioned by Rally Software and conducted by QSM Associates (QSMA). Titled "The Agile Impact Report: Proven Performance Metrics from the Agile Enterprise," the report also concluded that Agile teams were able to maintain normal defect counts despite significant schedule compression.

Rally Software commissioned independent research firm QSM Associates (QSMA) to execute the study, which included data collected from May through July 2008. The study measured the real-life performance of 26 Agile development projects against plan-based or waterfall industry averages in three key areas: productivity, time-to-market and defects.

"It is becoming clear that Agile practices have a very positive and demonstrable impact on software development teams across the enterprise," said Michael Mah, managing partner of QSM Associates. "I expect to see these already impressive results improve as these teams continue to scale Agile across their organizations and further progress along the Agile maturity curve."

Serena Software Joins Valtech in Agile Software Development Services Partnership
A new partnership announced today between application lifecycle management (ALM) leader Serena Software and Valtech, a global provider of strategic software consulting, lean and agile-focused software engineering, skills training and coaching, promises to usher in a new era of Agile software development in the enterprise. Building on its commitment to support the exponential growth of Agile methodologies in the enterprise, Serena is combining its enterprise IT tool-making expertise with Valtech's transformation, coaching and education techniques to help corporate employees make use of Agile processes quickly and on-demand, without extensive prior training.

Agile is an iterative software development methodology that promotes team collaboration and adaptability throughout a project lifecycle. It's faster and more responsive than the traditional waterfall model, which takes a purely sequential approach to creating software. As a result, Agile developers deliver software that more closely matches actual customer needs more quickly, since "user stories" replace "specs" in the application development process.

"Agile development methodologies are seeing tremendous adoption in ISVs and IT departments of all sizes," said Jeremy Burton, CEO of Serena.  "We are committed to delivering a pure-Agile toolset via SaaS later this year and are delighted to have Valtech as our partner of choice as we roll that toolset out to market."
